Different Types of Dog Coats -- and Why It Matters for Grooming
Not all coats are created equal. Understanding what type of coat your dog has is the foundation of good grooming -- and getting it wrong can cause real problems.
Not all coats are created equal, and understanding what kind of coat your dog has is the foundation of good grooming. There are several distinct coat types -- short and smooth, long and silky, curly or wavy, double-coated, wire-haired, and corded -- and each one has its own care requirements. Getting this wrong can mean unnecessary discomfort for your dog and a finish that doesn't suit them at all.
Short, smooth coats (like those on a Boxer or Dalmatian) are the most low-maintenance but still benefit from regular bathing and deshedding. Double-coated breeds like Border Collies and Samoyeds have a dense undercoat beneath a longer topcoat -- these should never be shaved down, as the double coat actually provides insulation in both directions. Curly and wavy coats (your Spoodles, Labradoodles, and Cavoodles) don't shed much, but they mat easily and need consistent brushing and regular trims to stay healthy.
Wire-haired breeds like Terriers have a coarse, textured topcoat that ideally should be hand stripped rather than clipped to maintain its proper texture and colour. Silky-coated dogs like Maltese or Yorkshire Terriers need frequent brushing and gentle handling to keep their fine coat tangle-free. When you bring your dog to Tūi & Chief, Samara will assess your dog's specific coat and talk you through exactly what approach will work best -- no one-size-fits-all approach here.
