How Often Should I Book a Grooming Appointment?

Every dog is different. Here's how to figure out the right grooming frequency for your specific dog -- and why consistency matters more than perfect timing.

Every dog is different, and honestly, so is every coat. As a general rule, most dogs benefit from a professional groom every four to six weeks -- but that's really just the starting point. The right frequency for your pup depends on their coat type, lifestyle, and how much maintenance you're doing at home between visits.

Dogs with longer, denser coats -- think Poodle crosses, Bichon Frises, or Schnauzers -- usually need to come in closer to the four-week mark. Left longer, these coats can tangle, mat, and become uncomfortable. Short-coated breeds like Labradors or Beagles can stretch to six or even eight weeks, though regular deshedding treatments still make a big difference to their skin health and to the amount of fur you find on your couch.

The best way to figure out your dog's ideal schedule is to have a chat with your groomer. At Tūi & Chief, Samara takes the time to look at your dog's individual coat and lifestyle, and together you can map out a routine that keeps them looking and feeling their best all year round. Consistency matters too -- dogs who come in regularly are far easier (and more comfortable) to groom than those who only visit once in a blue moon.
